Doctor Pascal Amireault obtained a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the Université de Montréal in 2005, then continued his training with postdoctoral fellowships in cell biology (Université Pierre et Marie Curie) and in physiology (Université Paris Descartes). He is currently an INSERM permanent research scientist in Professor Olivier Hermine's hematology laboratory at the Imagine Institute. He is also Associate Director of the “Tissue Biology of Red Blood Cells” laboratory where he carries out part of his research activity. In 2012, he was awarded the Arnault Tzanck Prize for his research in transfusion medicine. His main research interest seeks to understand the red blood cell aging process in vivo (in physiology or in the physiopathological context of beta-thalassemia) and in vitro (during blood bank storage), including the identification of mechanisms determining red blood cell clearance by the spleen. His long-term scientific goal is to advance clinical practice by: (i) enhancing red blood cell circulatory quality in patients with beta-thalassemia, healthy individuals and volunteer blood donors, and (ii) improving the blood supply with respect to red blood cell storage quality and transfusion quality.
