Giacomo started his scientific carrier as a biochemist at University of Pavia (Italy) where he obtained a Master degree in Industrial Biotechnologies. As a visiting student, he was also involved in biomedical studies at Biomedicinsk centrum (Sweden) where he worked on cellular localization of enzymes that catalyze glycosaminoglycan synthesis. In 2012, he joined the San Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy (Italy) first as a fellow, and then as PhD student. In this period, he worked in the fields of stem cell research and lentiviral-based gene therapy: he used human neural progenitors derived from induced pluripotent stem cells as a cellular model and as a cell-based therapy for a rare neurological genetic disorder.

Since 2018, he is a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Annarita Miccio’s Lab where he works on novel gene therapy strategies for the treatment of sickle cell disease.
